HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR PROJECT ON SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS THROUGH ORGANIC FARMING IN TAMIL NADU
Our Centre implemented this project in Tamil Nadu with support from Jamsetji Tata Trust, Mumbai. The project activities were implemented in Kancheepuram, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul and Nagapattinam districts. Some of the highlights of this project are as follows,
Demonstration of drum seeder
Production of certified and truthfully labeled seeds varied varieties of crops were taken up.
Support was provided for the beneficiaries for organic conversion under input support and crop loan scheme.
Entire land area under project has been certified under the group certification programme.
Organic farming technologies have been disseminated through demonstration fields established in all the four districts.
Capacities of the beneficiaries have been enhanced through series of short term and Trainers' Trainings and exposure visits.
Conserved traditional pumpkin variety under seed production
Public awareness on organic farming and related technologies was created through participation in Agri exhibitions and organizing food festivals.
Support was provided for the beneficiaries to establish 39 microenterprises related to organic farming.
Income generation capacity of the beneficiaries has been enhanced through individual and community level organic kitchen gardens and vermicompost production units.
Four NGOs from Ramanathapuram and Nagapattinam districts were selected and built the capacities on organic farming.
SRI method of paddy cultivation
A total of 43 organic farmers' sangams including 12 women farmers' groups were formed.
Infrastructure such as, seed grading and processing unit with a threshing yard, temporary training shed and biopesticide unit were established.
A total of 11 units of educational materials and awareness materials on various organic farming technologies were produced and distributed to the beneficiaries.
