The ASHA Kisan Swaraj Sammelan 2026 drew seed savers, farmers, researchers, and biodiversity champions from South India for a three-day celebration of seed sovereignty and agroecology. Held February 27-28 and March 1 at Karnataka State Open University, Hunsur Road, Mysore, the festival was jointly organized by Sahaja Samrudha, Using Diversity, Keystone Foundation, and Bharat Beej Swaraj Manch.

CIKS Stall: A Hit with Traditional Rice Varieties

Ms. Janani and Mr. Thulasi Dhasan represented CIKS, managing our stall over the three days. We displayed:

  • 30 traditional paddy varieties
  • Over 50 CIKS publications
  • Traditional rice gift boxes (Pride of Tamil Nadu, Anudhinam, Mother & Child, Luxury, Immunity, Aromatic collections)
  • Rice-based cookies from Thanga Samba and Mullan Kaimai varieties—visitors loved their taste and nutrition!

Thriving Farmer Interactions and Outreach

Our stall drew steady engagement from farmers across Tamil Nadu (Tiruvannamalai, Pudukkottai, and beyond)—many already familiar with CIKS work. Newcomers showed keen interest in traditional rice variety seeds, publications, and gift boxes, with several sharing contacts for future seed supplies and collaboration.

A Festival of Diversity
Other seed conservators showcased millets, diverse fruits and vegetables, roots, tubers, and traditional crops. The organizers treated attendees to healthy, traditional foods, fostering a joyful, community-driven vibe.

The Sammelan fostered knowledge sharing and alliances. CIKS valued this opportunity to strengthen networks and promote Tamil Nadu’s rice heritage with fellow seed conservators.
